I spoke at LA Design Festival about Octavia Butler as a futurist — not the science fiction writer who happened to make accurate predictions, but a rigorous practitioner of foresight who used fiction as her methodology.
The talk explored how Butler’s methods function as futures practice: the close reading of historical patterns, the extrapolation from present conditions, the insistence on centering the experiences of those most impacted by systems of power. And why, so consistently, Black women keep seeing what’s coming before anyone else is willing to look.
